Who we are

The Southampton Education School is advancing policy and practice in education, teaching and learning around the world.

We are one of the UK's highest-ranked research institutes for research impact, currently ranked 7th within the latest Research Excellence Framework. We are also consistently delivering an excellent undergraduate learning experience, with the Guardian's University guide positioning us in the top ten for a decade.

The Education school is part of the University of Southampton, a leading research-intensive Russell Group University, ranked in the top 100 worldwide Universities by the QS World University Rankings 2020.

Through our research we aim to respond to some of today's key issues; how people will work, the health of future generations, the issue of social equality and how to ensure people have essential skills in science, technology, engineering and maths to help address environmental and other challenges.

We offer a full range of degrees and programmes from undergraduate, through PGCE and Masters, to PhD, as well as professional development for in-service teachers. Preparing our students to make a difference in education policy, education management, research, and teaching.

Key facts

• As a Russell Group University, we have been rated one of the highest out of 22 UK Universities and listed in the Centre for Higher Education Development's ranking of excellent European graduate programmes.
• One of our academic team received the Universities Council for the Education of Teachers (UCET) Award for research in teacher education
• Since 2003, we have had close links with the Directorate of Educational and Training Services Army (British Army) DETS(A). Programmes have been organised to benefit careers of army personnel and officers. Officers take the Postgraduate Certificate in Education. The success of this programme led, in 2006, to a bespoke programme for a master’s degree.
